BALLET OF BIRDS

This project focuses on creating lightweight, aesthetically pleasing ballet costumes using digital crafting techniques. The Ballet of Birds collection is designed for a young opera ballet group, emphasizing sustainability and the inspiration drawn from wild bird dances. By combining collages with paper and embroidery and then converting them into digital versions, the project aims to achieve a balance between analogue and digital practices. Recycled yarn and packaging paper are used to build motifs, while velvet and silk are chosen for their luxurious appearance and suitability for showcasing feather features. Direct-to-garment printing techniques are employed to ensure sustainability and minimize waste, with a particular focus on engineered prints to optimize ink and fabric usage. The engineered artworks have opened creative possibilities and reduced fabric waste, with successful testing of patterned silk substrate for ballet shoes.
